Understanding a hard-to-reach setting
In Bakassi, reaching communities calls for an understanding of waterways, mangrove landscapes and seasonal access conditions. This hard-to-reach setting in Cameroon’s South West Region makes locally informed community engagement and service planning especially important.
Health access in 2022
The 2022 Health Information System (CIS 2022) population estimate was 36,980, across four identified health areas: Idabato, Isangele, Kombo Abedimo and Kombo Itindi.
The 2022 service context included seven functioning health facilities, four non-functioning facilities and 16 personnel across health institutions, alongside contracted community health workers. These are historical health-system figures for 2022.
Implications for community work
Fishing, farming and trading livelihoods, together with a long rainy season, shape community access and service planning. Reaching communities in this setting requires coordination with relevant health and community actors.
Partnerships that combine local knowledge with appropriate technical support can strengthen programme planning in hard-to-reach areas. Connect with CADEF to discuss community engagement and programme opportunities.
