Drinking Water Safety and Security: Community WASH Support in 2022

Community WASH support in the South West Region

Safe water and practical hygiene information are important to community wellbeing. CADEF’s Drinking Water Safety and Security Project was conceived as a pilot around World Water Day 2022 and expanded following the cholera outbreak in the South West Region.

CADEF worked with the Regional Delegation of Water and Energy, with support from UNICEF through the WASH Cluster, WHO, Limbe City Council and the South West Regional Delegation of Health.

Community reach across the South West

The project included communities in Fako—Buea, Limbe, Tiko and Idenau; Meme—Kumba I, II and III; Ndian—Bakassi; and Lebialem—Wabane.

Activities delivered

Community sensitisation covered water contamination, household water treatment and hygiene. The project also created and trained local water-management mechanisms to support continued community awareness.

Training and local committee engagement formed part of the approach to maintaining hygiene information within communities.

Water-purification tablets, soap and hand sanitiser were distributed alongside the awareness activities, pairing information with practical household supplies.

Learning and evidence

Combining household information, practical supplies and local committees provides a basis for continued WASH engagement. Follow-up monitoring can assess knowledge, use of supplies and the continuity of community activities.

Partnerships can help sustain local awareness, community water-management mechanisms and follow-up monitoring. These connections support continued engagement beyond individual distributions.
